Shedkm and Planit unveil £250m Stockport masterplan

Known as Stockport 8, the vision is part of a wider £1 billion investment in the town, including a £500 million masterplan for 4,000 new homes, transport improvements and new public spaces.

The AJ100 practice’s plans for a light industrial site stretching eastwards from King Street West to Stockport station envisages up to 1,200 new homes.

A second consultation on the designs is expected this summer, with a planning application due to be submitted to Stockport Council this autumn.

‘We want to design a thriving, inclusive neighbourhood that will deliver the needs of the community now and for generations to come and that has Stockport’s independent spirit and character at its core.’

A mixed tenure of homes and space for businesses and start-ups are also included, as is energy efficiency in all buildings and broadband improvements across the site.

The plot, which is currently light industrial and home to Stockport’s main bus garage, will see existing structures demolished to make way for the scheme.

Shedkm and Planit’s masterplan features a walkable neighbourhood with green landscaping, connections to the surrounding town centre and space for public events against the backdrop of a historic railway viaduct.

The development is backed by the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation and the English Cities Fund – a joint venture between Homes England, Muse and Legal & General.

Joe Stockton, senior development manager at Muse (part of the English Cities Fund), said:This is one of the largest town centre regeneration projects in the UK and it’s only right that the local community is at the heart of what we do. We’re excited to find out what local people and businesses want to see in the area to help us shape the plans and ensure there is something for everyone.
